Rich, Resinous and Woody

Pure frankincense essential oil captivates with its rich, resinous aroma, evoking a sense of ancient mystique. Its woody, earthy scent carries subtle hints of citrus and spice, imbuing spaces with a serene and grounding ambiance. Frankincense's deep and complex fragrance inspires introspection and tranquility, transporting the mind to sacred and contemplative realms.

What Is Frankincense?

This highly fragrant resin derives from the dried sap of Boswellia trees that flourished in wild profusion throughout the ancient world where it was burned as incense in sacred rituals. Today, these trees thrive in the stifling heat and burning winds of brutal environments found in north and Western Africa, India, Oman and Yemen. Also known as olibanum, the word comes from the old French, francencens, which is said to mean pure incense .The deepest tissues of the tree produce the aromatic compounds found in the resin, which acts as a natural sealant and protection when they trees are injured, infested by insects or attacked by fungal infections.

What Does Frankincense Smell Like?

Many describe the aroma of frankincense as earthy, piney or balsamic with soft, sugary and citrusy aspects. Its elusive and dynamic character may well lie at the root of the ancient and enduring fascination with this coveted resin. Generally speaking, it is balanced and grounding and serves as a popular aid in calming the human psyche. Most experts agree that frankincense has a woody and unique essence that is often expressed when used in fragrance diffusers. It is deep and yet light at the very same time, and its scented character reflects a one of-a-kind brightness.

How Is Frankincense Essential Oil Sourced?

Frankincense oil is extracted from the tree, the trunk of which is diagonally cut (tapped) with either a knife or axe to reach and extract the sap every two to four weeks during the dry season. This “tapping” process can only occur when the tree matures, which can take 8 to 10 years. The sap becomes a resin when it hardens. After harvesting, the resin is then distilled, which creates the essential oil. If frankincense oil isn’t extracted properly, it can result in an inferior product with a dull color and much weaker aroma. The process of harvesting can be dangerous, as the trees often grow high on cliff edges, have shallow roots and are often hidden havens for venomous snakes.

The Short History of Frankincense

Frankincense has a rich and glorious past dating back many centuries. The pharaohs of Egypt’s Golden Age relished the resin as a perfume befitting the gods, and it was often an ingredient in their embalming rites. Ancient Greeks believed that the smoke arising from frankincense had the power to divine the future. Romans basked in its unique scent during holy practices. The early Hebrews also burned frankincense in their sacred ceremonies. Perhaps the most famous use is found in the Book of Mathew where it is written that frankincense was one of the gifts of the magi, along with gold and myrrh, bestowed by Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar (the three wise men) upon the infant Jesus on the night of his birth.

What Are The Most Common Uses of Frankincense?

This coveted reason is found in a myriad of oils, perfumes and incense. The Catholic Church is one of the largest importers as it is a vital aspect in their many ceremonies. It is also a mainstay in aromatherapy applications where the scented oil boosts mood and calms and soothes troubled spirits. It is a mystical fragrance that is the center piece for many fine perfumes, scented candles and soaps. Many classic perfumes contain this iconic resin; namely, Chanel No.5 and and Shalimar by Guerlain.

Why Does Frankincense Work Well in A Diffuser?

Inhaled for its grounding, sweet and earthy character, frankincense is known to enhance mood, reduce levels of stress and anxiety and improve concentration and memory. It becomes a sweet and calming cloud that serves as an effective way to refine the fragrance, remove pathogens and purify indoor air.

Is Frankincense Safe For Use Around Pets?

Although the application of any essential oil should always be deemed acceptable by a veterinarian, frankincense is said to promote feelings of peace and relaxation in dogs. It has found its way into some pet care products as well, but it must always be 100% pure and used in moderation.
