Scents and The Holiday Spirit

The rich, comforting and grounding scents of winter are deeply entwined within the human connection to warmth, comfort, family holiday joy, and kinship with Mother Nature’s glorious creations.

For so many, the holidays can mark a time of beauty and sparkling celebration. There are a myriad of pleasant scents associated with the holiday season.

They include but are far from limited by: freshly baked apple pie; rum-infused pumpkin pie; honeyed ham; sweet cookies and candies.

While all delectable, fattening and memorable, there is nothing that evokes the holidays more powerfully than the aroma of fresh cut pine, spruce or balsam fir that are often found in wreaths, trees and garlands.

The Enduring Legacy of the Balsam Christmas Tree

Although the exact origins of the Christmas tree are long lost to time, it is known that ancient cultures, including Egypt, believed evergreen trees, wreaths and boughs symbolized eternal life.

It is recorded that Martin Luther in 16th century Germany introduced the European custom of bringing a tree into his home and adorning it with candles.

Although the modern era has brought about a preference for artificial trees, statistics indicate that circa 11 million American families still prefer a real tree at Christmas time.

There is a reference to balsam trees in the Old Testament (2 Samuel 5:23). The young shepherd, David, in the classic battle with the Philistine giant, Goliath, is instructed to attack from the rear (“opposite the balsam trees”.).

This story marks the beginning of his rise to future glory and kingship.

The Diverse Evergreen Scent Of Conifers

Truth be told, no cutting edge laboratory can duplicate the exact smell of evergreen that seeps through the essence of the tree and into the hearts of humans celebrating this sacred holiday.

There are more than 550 species of conifers, which are an order of trees and shrubs that have needle-shaped or scale-like leaves and cones.

Some varieties, such as yews, bear fruit, and each type presents its own magical, sugary and piney woods perfume.

Why Is The Scent Of Balsam Fir So Beloved?

Piney balsam is an olfactory journey to a winter forest blanketed in snow.

Its crisp, fresh and evergreen aura crystalizes in the mind’s eye visions of dazzling colors and shapes adorning tall, feathery Christmas trees.

It presents the feeling of life, hope and renewal at a time when the surrounding world is softly dying and in its darkest days.

Its aroma is symbolic and indelible once planted into memory.

Therein lies its power to evoke memories from past holidays, and for this reason many celebrants will be drawn to and buy the kind of tree that they once had as child.

Balsam trees are good for planet Earth.

They are not harvested from the forest but rather as crops on tree “farms”.

It takes years for them to mature during which time they serve to reduce air pollutants, produce oxygen, conserve water and animal habitats.

While Christmas tree preferences are linked to cultural and childhood associations, balsam fir is the most popular scent of Christmas and these trees are most abundant in Maine.

They are well known for their long-lasting fragrance that transforms an average living room into a winter wonderland of slightly spicy and resinous sweetness that embraces the human soul.

Their branches are strong and perfect for decorating and the aromatic foliage is also used to make balsam pillows.

Some Interesting Facts About Piney Balsam

Piney balsam is also known as “blister pine”. The name derives from the fact that its bark is covered in blisters that release a sticky resin when poked.

Balsam fir cones stand upright on the branches unlike other conifers where the cones hang in a downward position. In the fall they ripen, shatter on the tree and only a central spike remains.

The needles of the balsam fir are known for their suction-cup type structure that balances their positions on the twig.

These trees can grow anywhere from 17 feet to 200 feet when matured.

The leaves are like needles and each one grows singly from the branch. This sets fir trees apart from pine trees, which have needles that develop in batches.

The Balsam Fir can survive incredibly cold temperatures as low as−45 °C (−49 °F) and even can withstand immersion in liquid nitrogen after proper cold hardening.

The resin from the Balsam Fir is also favored as a natural semi-permanent glue and at one time was also chewed raw as a gum cleanser.

The Balsam fir is know to regenerate fairly quickly after a natural disaster.

The hardy nature of the balsam fir permits the hybridization with other firs, especially in locations where their ranges may coincide.

The Balsam Fir has a unique identification. Needles are always flat with two white bands underneath which appear to be horizontally level, which is particularly visible on the lower branches of the tree.
