What Exactly Are Dryer Balls?

Wool dryer balls are a natural, cost-effective alternative to fabric softeners and dryer sheets. Infused with fragrance oils, they last for years, are non-toxic, and eco-friendly.

Originating from ancient laundry practices, they gained modern popularity in 2014 when Abby Curtis of Michigan’s Frankenmuth Woolen Mill crafted the first wool dryer ball, transforming a mundane task with a simple, sustainable solution.

What Are The Benefits of Wool Dryer Balls?

Dryer balls have many advantages. Researchers estimate that they reduce dryer time by 25%, which translates to lower energy bills.

They also are quiet, eliminating that annoying, sharp clank of plastic drying balls that makes you feel like you are living in a busy railway terminal.

They soften clothes and reduce static cling by separating laundry and improving air flow.

They are also safer to use than fabric softeners and dryer sheets, which are known to contain potentially toxic ingredients that can act as triggers for asthma and allergy sufferers who can be exposed to chemicals that have not yet been scientifically evaluated.

How Do Dryer Balls Work?

When a load of wet fabric is added to the dryer, it tends to clump together even with the contrasting force of the tumble mode.

Adding several wool dryer balls separates the fabrics and softens them so that the hot air can circulate more effectively to evaporate the moisture.

How many to use for each application may vary, but most people use about three.

Six will cut down even further on drying time. They work best with medium rather than larger batches of laundry.

Wool dryer balls are an all-natural alternative that when scented with essential oils, can deliver a subtle scent to laundry that is both safe and non-toxic.

After the drying cycle, remove the balls and store them in a dry place for future use.

How Are Dryer Balls Used?

Depending on the size of the load, use between 3 to 6 balls. Add a few drops of essential or fragrance oil and spray balls with water before putting them into the dryer.

Let them bounce for a minute or two to give them time to soak. This will reduce wrinkling of fabric.

Add to laundry and enjoy the long-lasting fragrance that will subtly permeate all your clothes, towels and sheets. To clean them, throw them into a load of laundry and wash them in hot water.

A wool dryer ball needs replacement when it can no longer be refreshed by recharging and there’s more static cling.

Visually, they are ready to be put to sleep when you start to see bits and pieces of the ball falling off.

They can, however, be used for hundreds of laundry loads before they need to be replaced. Signs of pilling only requires recharging and not replacing.

This is done by placing the balls inside a thin sock or stocking and washing with hot water on a gentle cycle. Dry on high heat.

How to Make Wool Dryer Balls

Dryer balls are much less expensive to make than to purchase.

They are harmlessly soft when they bounce around the dryer, and because they only absorb moisture for a little while, they never get moldy.

They are a safe alternative method to keep clothes soft and static-free, and since they're wool, they can’t retain moisture for long or become moldy.

Wind the Yarn into Balls:

  • Start with a small core by wrapping yarn around your fingers a few times, then fold it into a small ball.
  • Continue wrapping the yarn tightly around the core, changing directions to form a round shape.
  • Keep wrapping until the ball is about the size of a tennis ball (roughly 2.5-3 inches in diameter). A single ball typically uses 1/3 to 1/2 of a standard skein of wool yarn.
  • Tuck the end of the yarn under a few layers to secure it.

Secure the Balls:

  • Place each ball into a pantyhose or an old sock. Tie a knot or use a piece of yarn to separate each ball to prevent them from sticking together during felting.

Felt the Balls in the Washing Machine:

  • Place the pantyhose/sock with the balls in a washing machine.
  • Run a hot water wash cycle with a small amount of detergent, followed by a high-heat dry cycle. This process felts the wool, causing the fibers to bind together.
  • Check the balls after the cycle. They should feel firm and slightly fuzzy. If they’re still loose, repeat the wash and dry cycle.

Remove and Finish:

  • Once felted, cut the pantyhose or sock to remove the balls.
  • Trim any loose fuzz or stray yarn ends with scissors for a smooth appearance.
  • Optional: If the balls aren’t fully felted, use a felting needle to poke and tighten loose areas.

Scenting:

  • Add a few drops of fragrance oil to each ball for a pleasant scent. Let the oil soak in for a few hours before use.
