Stinky Dog? The Keys To Controlling Smelly Pet Odors

For all of us who know the joy and comfort of owning a pet, there is also that inevitable downside concerning pet accidents and the odors associated with them.

It’s that moment in time when the family cat won’t look you in the face and the dog keeps smiling and backing away from whatever that steaming stink is on your expensive carpet, all the while pointing an accusing paw at poor Tabby.

In sinking ships there may be no comrades, but in the case of pet accidents, hope springs eternal that all will be forgiven, especially with all of the odor control possibilities we’ve gathered here.

Home Pet Odor Removal

The most obvious odor-producing culprits are vomit, feces and urine. The reason feces smells so badly is due to the bacteria, which comprise about 25% of the weight of the stool.

These pathogens are invisible to the human eye and reproduce at the startling rate of every 10 minutes!

Emesis (vomit) can best be eradicated when it is discovered right away.

While dried vomit can be effectively cleaned as well, stains can ensue, making removal more difficult, but not impossible, with a little help from our industrial strength air freshener and odor control products.

Sometimes vomiting is normal for cats, but pet owners beware because it can also be an indication that your animal may be sick.

10 Tips To Eliminate Pet Malodors In Your Home

1. Never Underestimate The Power of Daily Carpet Vacuuming

Vacuuming first can release pet fur and dander that has gotten trapped in carpets, furniture and even fabric window coverings. It can also help to release them from non-carpeted floors as well. Sprinkle Rug Aroma, which acts a neutralizer over all carpets, rugs, and upholstered surfaces, and let it sit for several hours; then vacuum again.

2. Expose Fabric Covered Items To Fresh Air And Sunlight

That old conventional clothes line still works well as a way way to expose items to the wind and avoid bugs. Sunlight and airflow help to eradicate many kinds of odors trapped within fabric fibers. Also, open curtains and windows for several hours a day when possible.

3. Find The Source Of The Problem (Stench)

While this quest can never match the fun of hunting for buried treasure, it must be done because urine odors may be the culprit. If the source is still elusive after a search, walk through the room in question after dusk or in the dark while holding a low cost black light with the rest of the room’s lights turned off. (A blacklight, aka a UV-A light, or ultraviolet light, is a lamp that emits long-wave (UV-A) ultraviolet light and very little visible light.) This light will reveal (fluoresce) urine spots (uric acid) and problem areas that require proper cleaning.

4. Wash the Floors, Baseboards And Walls

Thoroughly wash hard floors, like tile, vinyl and wood, baseboards and walls with a disinfectant cleaning solution (such as Mr. Clean, Fabuloso or Pine Sol)  and hot water. Scrub the bare floors and walls where pets have left their mark. After drying, mix diluted Enz-O-Matic (see label) odor neutralizer with a fresh bucket of water and mop the floor surface. Allow to dry.

5. Transform Affected Area Into An Unattractive Spot For Pets

This can be done by selecting a new scent for the affected areas after it is properly cleaned. The reason behind this is because as long as the pet can smell their personal scent, they will continue to return to the “accident zone.”

6. Avoid Steam Cleaners To Eliminate Urine Odors

The heat  from the steam will permanently set the stain and the odor by bonding the protein in urine into any man-made fibers.

7. Avoid Cleaning Chemicals Such As Ammonia Or Vinegar

Strong chemical odors may encourage your pet to reinforce the urine scent mark in that area.

8. Locate Older Messes

In some cases, old messes will have dried up and be difficult to locate. To find them, you must use your nose to sniff out soiled areas. You may need to look very closely, and once again, a black light can often help with identification. You can then outline affected areas with chalk.

9. Treating Stains That Are Still Wet

For hard surfaces use Zorb-It-All instant-acting odor neutralizing pick up gel on wet excrement, vomit, urine and blood. Wait 3-5 minutes and sweep into a dust pan and place into a trash bag. The clean the surface with a disinfectant cleaner.

For newer stains on carpets, soak up as much of the urine as possible: Place a thick layer of paper towels on the wet spot, and cover that with a thick layer of paper towels to remove as much liquid as possible. Place newspaper under the soiled area as well and stand on this padding for about a minute, (blotting up) and repeat until the area is barely damp. Place the urine-soaked paper towels into a trash bag and into your outdoor trash can or dumpster.

Apply an aerosol cleaner such as Spot Shot onto the barely damp surfaces and blot up again. Then apply fresh clean water onto the treated area to moisten heavily and blot up the paper towels again. Dispose of the towels when completed. Spray the wet carpet area with a product such as WalMart’s Great Value Aerosol Disinfectant. Then blot up again.

Carefully insert a scratch all tool or a long sharp nail between the carpet fibers to reach the backing and floor surface. Slowly remove the sharp tool and insert syringe needle, liberally applying Oh No Pet Odor Neutralizer, which neutralizes stubborn odors caused by the dry uric acid salts that penetrated the carpet and dried on the flooring surface.

10. Machine-Wash Items And Mattresses

In most cases, adding a one-pound box of baking soda to a regular detergent, washing as usual, and air-drying will eliminate many pet odors and stains. If these remain after washing, repeat and use 8 oz. of Enz-O-Matic neutralizer per load, which will effectively break down pet-waste odors.

If your pet soils the sheets or blankets on a bed, cover the bed with a vinyl, flannel-backed tablecloth while you retrain them.

If your pet soils the mattress, while the bedding is being cleaned, apply Spot Shot Aerosol onto the stains it the mattress and blot with paper towels. Dispose of the soiled paper towels in a trash bag. Then apply fresh water to the stains and blot again. Then heavily apply an aerosol disinfectant spray such as WalMart’s Great value brand. Allow to dry before putting the bedding back on. Use of a hair dryer can expedite drying time.

Trash Dumpster Odor Control

The reason why Metazene is so potent lies in the realm of industrial science.

Most odor neutralizers depend upon surface enzymes and anti-bacterial agents to produce a microbial action that will eliminate foul odors.

While this does occur on a limited level, microbial agents are completely ineffectual when it comes to residual odors.

Metazene effectively destroys malodors in the air.
